A Town Built for Weather Extremes
On January 22, 1943, the temperature in Spearfish rose from −4°F to 45°F in two minutes as a chinook wind arrived. It is still listed as a world record for the fastest temperature rise. You will not see that every winter, but quick, large swings are part of life in the northern Black Hills. Windows here need tight seals and frames that tolerate movement (see frame materials).
Old and New
About 34% of Spearfish homes were built before 1980, including about 10% before 1940, and about 40% since 2000 (U.S. Census ACS 2020–2024). The median home value, $346,200, is the highest of the towns on this site.

| Older homes near downtown | Newer subdivisions |
|---|---|
| Wood sashes, possible lead paint, storm windows | Builder-grade vinyl, possible seal failures |
| Consider repair vs. replace. Lead-safe firms required for pre-1978 work | Check original warranties first |
Energy Ratings
Spearfish is in ENERGY STAR’s Northern zone like the rest of South Dakota. Look for the U-factor and SHGC on the NFRC label and compare to the Northern-zone criteria.
Getting Estimates
Some Rapid City window companies travel to Spearfish, and there are local companies too. Ask whether travel time is built into the price and who handles warranty service.
Permits
Spearfish has its own building department. Check whether your project needs a permit, especially if you are changing window sizes or the home is historic.
Request a Free Window Estimate
A couple of quick questions, then an independent window company that works in your town will contact you to measure.
Please note: Rapid City Window Replacement refers homeowners to independent window installers. We are not a contractor.
