Newer Houses
About 59% of Box Elder’s homes were built in 2000 or later, and the median build year is 2004 (U.S. Census ACS 2020–2024). Replacement here is usually not about rot or lead paint. It is about:
- Builder-grade vinyl windows with failed seals (fog between panes)
- Broken locks, balances or cranks
- Upgrading to better glass for comfort
- Hail-damaged frames or glass
Check the Warranty First
If your home is fairly new, the original windows may still be under a manufacturer’s warranty for seal failure. Find the brand stamped in the spacer between the panes or on the frame, and call the manufacturer before paying for replacement. A window company can sometimes replace just the glass unit.
Wind on the Plains
East of Rapid City, homes sit in open country with fewer trees. Wind-driven snow and rain test seals and flashing. Casement and awning windows close tightly against the wind (see casements), and good exterior flashing matters more than usual.
Military Families
Ellsworth Air Force Base is set to be the first home of the B-21 Raider bomber, and the area is growing. If you expect to sell after a tour, focus on replacing failed units and keep receipts and warranty paperwork for buyers.
Permits
Box Elder is its own city with its own building department. Ask it, or your installer, whether a same-size window replacement needs a permit there.
